Motor Activity Training Program

The Motor Activity Training Program (MATP) is designed for athletes with severe or profound intellectual disabilities who are not yet able to take part in official Special Olympics sports competitions.

Each athlete works at their own pace on fundamental skills: mobility, dexterity, striking, throwing, catching and moving. The programme provides individualised sessions, run together with coaches, families and volunteers.

Here, athletes are not measured against each other: personal progress is what counts. The programme includes MATP days, where every athlete can show what they have achieved and be cheered for it.

At a glance

  • Individualised sessions adapted to each athlete’s abilities
  • Direct involvement of families and carers
  • Personal progress valued over ranking
